2011, 9,616 MW of wind energy capacity was installed in the EU, making a total of 93,957 MW - enough to supply 6.3% of the EU's electricity, according to figures published today. Representing 21.4% of new power capacity, wind energy installations in 2011 were very similar to the previous year's 9,648 MW. The wind industry has had an average annual growth of 15.6% over the last 17 years (1995-2011).

So often it is engineering solutions that meet our insatiable demands to ‘push the limits’ both in technological and physical terms. And so it is, that engineers have their brains picked and have their crystal balls consulted once again to realise those engineering solutions. E-mobility is yet another of those societal demands and indeed our European engineers will undoubtedly provide what is essentially a huge missing link in the conundrum that has been formed by calls for greener transport, lower CO2 emissions, energy efficiency and the general rising costs (and scarcity) of fossil fuels.

The world is hurtling towards a climate and energy disaster - that’s the message emerging from the International Energy Agency’s 2011 World Outlook published in November. The report sets 2017 as a deadline for action: we must stop building fossil fuel plants on such a scale by then or we will lock the world into climate change – beyond 2°C – the level that scientists have identified as dangerous.
At a European Union level, the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) has long argued that logic requires us to t stop building fossil fuel plants by 2015 because fossil fuel plants have long lifetimes. If we are to meet our 2050 objectives of cutting carbon emissions by at least 80%, we must stop building fossil fuel plants at least thirty years before then.

Over 141 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy capacity is built, under construction, consented, or planned in Europe: enough to power 130 million average EU households.
These wind farms - representing 35 times more capacity than the just under 4 GW installed today - would provide 13.1% of Europe's total electricity production.

New results on offshore electricity grid infrastructure in Europe: the EU "OffshoreGrid" project analysis reveals tremendous cost saving potential, says a report published in Brussels today.
Offshore grids, connecting North and Baltic Sea wind farms to electricity consumers, will be substantially cheaper to build than expected.

The European Commission this week presented a communication on security of energy supply and international cooperation.
While the EU needs a more coordinated approach to its energy policy, the Greens believe the Commission's proposals are undermined by the failure to outline a strategy to reduce the EU's dependence on fossil fuel imports.

On 8th of November in the little German town of Lubmin an ostentatious inauguration of the North Stream pipeline opened the first direct route of Russian gas to the EU, bypassing the previous transit countries.
‘One more wrong foot will end Ukrainian future as a transit country’, - warned vice Chairman of the State Duma and President of the Russian Gas Society Valery Yazev, referring to ‘Gazprom’-‘Naftagaz’ disputes that cause dramatic rupture in gas supplies to the EU in the past. Awaiting of the launch of Shtokman gas resource in Barents Sea that accounts about four trillion cubic meters, ‘NS’ will be filled from the existing one.
