A new report by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides an assessment of relevant European Research and Innovation (R&I) projects on the decarbonization of the waterborne sector in Europe, specifically focusing from 2020 to 2024.

'Research and innovation supporting the decarbonisation of the European Waterborne Sector,' analyses various projects and initiatives. Specifically, it aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime and inland waterway transport sectors based on the European Commission's Transport Research and Innovation Monitoring and Information System (TRIMIS).

The report also highlights the importance of technological innovation, such as alternative fuels and energy sources, digitalisation, power and propulsion systems and optimised vessel design in achieving decarbonisation goals. It also emphasises the role of operational measures and the need for coordination and support measures to facilitate implementing and adopting these innovations.

Additionally, a qualitative assessment of some EU-funded projects on the topic identifies the importance of project management, including the need for clear communication, flexibility, and expertise, in ensuring the success of decarbonization projects. The report provides an overview of decarbonization efforts in the waterborne sector and identifies key areas for further research and innovation.
