#EuropeanDayOfLanguages - Celebrating languages as cultural heritage

On 26 September, the European Day of Languages was celebrated in Europe in the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Schools, cultural institutes, libraries and associations will organize various events, including seminars, quizzes, lectures, radio shows, poetry readings and stories. In Brussels, the European Commission are organizing a conference on Multilingual Education and Cultural Expression for today (27 September). Participants will discuss policies and practices in this area and will be invited to listen to poetry, music and images and to explore an exhibition of lesser-known languages spoken in the European Union. All of this will illustrate the richness of Europe's linguistic heritage.
Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Commissioner Tibor Navracsics (pictured) said: "Languages are at the crossroads of culture, education and identity. Promoting linguistic diversity is part of the DNA of the EU and language learning is at the heart of our efforts to build a European area of education by 2025. That is why, last May, I presented a Council recommendation to boost language learning and teaching. This year the EU has a special opportunity to celebrate languages: the legal basis for multilingualism, which defines the official languages of the EU and represents the raison d'être of translation and interpretation in the EU, Council Regulation 1/58, celebrates its 60th anniversary."
On this occasion, Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger, in charge of the budget, human resources, translation and interpretation, said: "In the European Union, we need to be able to better understand, interact and work with each other. Working for citizens in 24 languages requires many invisible heroes. The European Day of Languages is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the work of all translators and interpreters whose tireless efforts help make Europe possible. "
