In 2022, Esch-sur-Alzette, the second largest city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, will be the European Capital of Culture, along with 18 neighboring municipalities in Luxembourg and in France. Esch-sur-Alzette will share the title of European Capital of Culture with Kaunas in Lithuania and Novi Sad in Serbia.

Esch2022 will invigorate the former mining region of Esch-sur-Alzette through arts and culture and sustainable tourism, reflecting contemporary societal trends in its program. It will gather projects under the leitmotif Remix Culture and its four sub-themes: Remix Art, Remix Europe, Remix Nature and Remix Yourself.

Highlights include:

  • The exhibition Remix Yourself / Remix Identity, created in partnership with the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, which will examine the way our identity is reinvented in the digital age (February to May 2022).
  • The exhibition Remix Nature, developed in partnership with Haus der elektronischen Künste (HeK) in Basel, will be an opportunity to explore the links between technology, culture and nature, delving into the notion of the anthropocene in relation to the region of Esch-sur-Alzette (June to August 2022).
  • Remix Art, created in partnership with Ars Electronica, will question the relationship between art and science as well as the role of art and artists in context of digital developments (September to November 2022).
  • Remix Europe, the immersive multimedia exhibition conceived in collaboration with Historical Consulting and Tinker Imagineers, turns to the future and to an evolving Europe, and will conclude the program of the year (December 2022).

The ambitious programme is developed in collaboration between Luxembourgish and French municipalities, establishing one regional identity. Esch2022 will collaborate with artists, regional groups and associations, and international cultural institutions working with digital art.

Along its engaging cultural programming, Esch2022 will be a destination for sustainable tourism. Nature lovers are invited to explore a new hiking trail connecting eleven municipalities in the south of Luxembourg, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Minett area and the many mountain bike trails in the Prënzebierg natural reserve.

The European Capital of Culture Esch2022 invites you to an exclusive presentation of the program and selected projects of Esch2022 with live-talks, keynotes and animations. Speakers and guests include Nancy Braun (General Director Esch2022), Françoise Poos (Cultural Program Director Esch2022), creative professionals and lead partners from Luxembourg and France, as well as representatives from ministries and local institutions.

The initiative was developed by the European Commission in 1985 and has, to date, been awarded to more than 50 cities across the European Union.

The European Capitals of Culture initiative is designed to:

-       Highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe

-       Celebrate the cultural features Europeans share

-       Increase European citizens' sense of belonging to a common cultural area

-       Foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities

In addition to this, experience has shown that the event is an excellent opportunity for:

  • Regenerating cities
  • Raising the international profile of cities
  • Enhancing the image of cities in the eyes of their own inhabitants
  • Breathing new life into a city's culture
  • Boosting tourism
