On 2 February, the Commission highlighted EU actions to tackle cancer in women at an online event entitled "Guaranteeing Equal Access for All: Cancer in Women - European Plan to defeat cancer.

On the occasion of this event, Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides (pictured) said: "When we launched the 'Europe against Cancer' Plan a year ago, we committed to devote significant resources to addressing the worrying inequalities that people face in terms of access to prevention, treatment and care across the EU. In 2020 alone, over 550,000 women died from cancer and over 1.2 million women were diagnosed with the disease in the EU. Cancers that predominantly affect women present particular challenges in terms of global health equity. With the European Cancer Plan, we want to ensure that everyone has equal access to care, regardless of gender and place of residence. Our Cancer Plan is Europe's roadmap making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their loved ones."

The first in an annual series, this event aims to raise women's awareness of cancer and announce the latest actions under the European Plan to Beat Cancer, a political priority of the Commission. It will bring together a range of skills and experience, with input from people with cancer experience, policy makers, healthcare professionals and European cancer organizations.

The event was broadcast live.
