CPMR member regions adopt a strong political declaration calling for a central role in the renewal of the European project at the occasion of the 50th CPMR General Assembly meeting in Agios Nikolaos hosted by the Region of Crete (Greece) on 28-29 October.

In a context of global instability, regional disparities in Europe risk to increase, threatening the good functioning of the single market and the support to the European project and its institutions. In the run-up to the CPMR’s 50th anniversary next year, CPMR members have adopted a set of reflections projecting a brighter future for the European project if it counts Regions as a solid partner.

Regions are strategic actors to deliver on the priorities of the European Union, such as achieving carbon neutrality or ensuring a socially fair energy transition. “The current geopolitical situation and the stemming energy crisis we are facing today has made more urgent than ever the need for Europe to become strategically autonomous,” said Cees Loggen, president of the CPMR and Regional Minister of Noord-Holland. “As maritime and peripheral regions, we have a key contribution to provide. We need to harness the full potential of our territories, and nurture the power from the wind and the sea. We need to accelerate the development of offshore renewable energies, which will not only help put Europe in the pathway towards energy self-sufficiency, but also lead us to achieve Europe’s climate objectives and commitments.”

The CPMR member regions gathered in Crete for the General Assembly strongly believe that the answer to the challenges we face, at all levels, is more European cooperation, not less, and a political project that puts people first and regions at the core. The declaration points to the importance of place-based European policies that reach citizens from all corners of Europe. The CPMR encourages EU institutions to strengthen partnerships with regional authorities and to reassert Cohesion Policy as the main investment policy, ensuring that the new generation of policies is fully shaped on a place-based and multilevel governance approach, able to deliver current and upcoming challenges.
