European Parliament votes on new European Commission

20140916PHT63611_width_600MEPs decide today (22 October) whether to approve the new European Commission led by Jean-Claude Juncker. In a debate before the vote, they can also say what they think about Juncker’s plans as Commission president for the next five years. As part of European Commission election process, all candidate commissioners were questioned by MEPs to assess if they were fit for the job. Now the Parliament has the final say. From 29 September to 20 October, EP committees questioned all candidate commissioners during three-hour long hearings to assess their competence.

On 22 October, president-elect Juncker presents his team of commissioners to the Parliament and discussed the incoming Commisison's working programme with MEPs.

After the debate, MEPs vote whether to approve or reject the European Commission as a whole. If elected, the new Commission starts its five-year term on 1 November.
