#EPPresident: Gianni Pittella, Leader of the S&D Group, throws his hat into the ring
Socialist and Democrat MEPs have unanimously backed the Group President Gianni Pittella as their candidate for the presidency of the European Parliament. Pittella has argued that the post should be reserved for a S&D candidate, since the European Commission and European Council both have Presidents from the European People’s Party group.
S&D Group President Gianni Pittella (Italian) said he was ready for the new challenge and that his candidacy would represent change. He said that he would never accept a right-wing monopoly controlling the EU institutions.
Pittella’s aim is nothing less than saving Europe. In order to do so he wasn’t to put an end to the blind austerity and the national selfishness that has degraded the European Union. He promises to put forward a vision based on left-wing ideas, principles and strategies as an alternative to those advocated by the right.
Pittella argues that what is needed is not less Europe, but more Europe: “If we want to deal with the challenges and threats facing Europe then we cannot simply defend the status quo.
