EU strengthens its direct support to the people of Belarus
The European Commission has adopted ‘EU4Belarus', a €24 million assistance package that will benefit directly the Belarusian people, in particular civil society and independent media, students and youth professionals and small and medium-sized enterprises. It will also strengthen health capacities to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Neighbourhood and Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi said: “The immense courage of the Belarusian people who peacefully mobilized to defend their democratic and human rights is an inspiration for us all. With this newly adopted support package, the EU is making it clear that it stands on the side of the people of Belarus and delivers on its commitment to step up support to civil society. We also stand ready to support a democratic and peaceful transition in the country with all tools and instruments at our disposal.”
This programme is part of the €53m package announced in August, which includes €3.7m in emergency support mobilised immediately after the political crisis started, following the 9 August elections.
