South Stream Opening Ceremony
Today, a few hundred steps away from a tiny village Varvarovka (Anapa)
at Black Sea ‘Gasprom’ inaugurated the construction of the ‘South Steam’ gaz pipeline,
designed to deliver Russian gaz to Europe bypassing Ukraine.
The ceremony took place just in the plain field, where the tent of
Gazprom was installed to host numerous distinguished guests and press.
Ambassadors of the transit countires, energy companies, including, the major
partners of the project Eni (20%),Wintershall Holding GmbH (15%), EDF (15%).
"Together with Nord Stream - the similar system on the seabed of the Baltic Sea - South Stream
will create conditions for safe, unconstrained deliveries of Russian gas to our key consumers
in Europe," - said president Putin.
A thousand kilometres pipeline is meant to supply 10% of the EU energy
consumption basket, passing through Southern Europe.
Guenther Oettinger, EU Energy Commissioner declined
the invitation to the ceremony, previously he described it as a ‘phantom’
project and gave his full support to a rival endeavour ‘Nabucco’.
The inauguration is seen as a political gesture of
Kremlin at the eve of the December EU-Russia Summit.
Russian side promotes the project as a part of the routes diversification and creation of thousands jobs in Southern Europe.
