Daniel Dalton MEP: 'We need better enforcement of existing animal welfare rules, not new laws'
West Midlands MEP Daniel Dalton (pictured) has called for more rigorous enforcement of existing animal welfare rules in a debate on a new European animal welfare strategy in the European Parliament.
Dalton highlighted that while existing laws are ignored it is completely pointless to introduce yet more new laws. He cited the example of puppy smuggling, where current rules are being flagrantly breached and unhealthy animals are being imported and sold to unsuspecting buyers in the UK, as proper checks are not carried out.
Dalton said: “We have the strictest animal welfare rules in the world, but if they are not enforced they are worthless. There is no point in having a new animal welfare strategy unless we recognise that the existing laws are widely ignored and are often only given lip service by many member states.”
