#NadiyaSavchenko: MEPs send a letter to Vladimir Putin asking for her release
The Vice President of the ALDE Group, Petras Auštrevičius, initiated a letter addressed to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, co-signed by 46 MEPs from 5 political groups in the European Parliament, to protest about the 'trial' of Nadiya Savchenko.
The MEPs regard the verdict against the Ukrainian citizen, military pilot and member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, as illegal and fabricated.
They strongly criticise this politically-orchestrated shameful decision of the Russian court and call on the Russian Federation to stop violating international humanitarian law and, in particular, the Third Geneva Convention relating to the Treatment of Prisoners of War of 12 August 1949.
The MEPs remain very much concerned about an extremely fragile state of health of Nadiya Savchenko, particularly after she decided to renew a dry hunger strike, and demand her immediate release.
