Coming up in #EUPlenary: Future of Europe, Russian propaganda, three prime ministers

Leo Varadkar, Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland, will debate the future of Europe with MEPs on Wednesday (17 January) morning in the first of a series of debates on the subject between EU leaders and MEPs.

Before that MEPs will discuss the outcome of the December summit, including Brexit, with European Council President Donald Tusk on Tuesday morning (16 January).

Changing of the guard

Bulgaria took over the EU Council presidency from Estonia on 1 January. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov will present Bulgaria’s presidency priorities on Wednesday. It is the first time Bulgaria has held the presidency.

Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas will discuss the results of Estonia’s presidency on Tuesday.

Fake news

MEPs will examine the influence of Russian propaganda on EU countries and alleged attempts to manipulate elections using fake news on Wednesday afternoon.

New rules extending EU export controls to cyber-surveillance tools (e.g  devices to intercept mobile phones and hack into computers) that could be used by authoritarian regimes to violate human rights will be voted on Wednesday.
