Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen (pictured) took part in a written Q&A interview with the Cornell Law Forum, the biannual magazine of US-based Cornell University Law School, according to a President Office statement, on 16 December.

The interview is featured in the magazine’s fall 2020 issue, focused on the theme of “Leading through Adversity”, and is part of a series of stories on 10 alumni, including Tsai, who obtained her master’s degree from Cornell in 1980.

According to Tsai, one major leadership lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic has been the importance of creating a shared sense of purpose. Inspiring unity, the president said, was the real key to Taiwan’s success in combating COVID-19.

Responding to a question on the topic of gender, Tsai noted that effective leadership requires a wide range of character traits and skills that transcend gender, and said that, as Taiwan’s head of state, she has a responsibility to promote women’s empowerment, both at home and abroad.

In a tweet from her official Twitter account, President Tsai described herself as honoured to feature in the magazine alongside other inspiring alumni.
