Taiwan opens representative office in southern France

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced the opening of a new representative office in Aix-en-Provence, France, 14 December. In a statement, the ministry described the move as part of the government’s broader efforts to deepen the Taiwan-France friendship and expand bilateral co-operation.

The office, located in the southern region of Provence, held an inauguration ceremony co-hosted by Francois Chihchung Wu, Taiwan’s representative to France, and Hsin Chi-chih, head of the new office. The event also featured virtual messages from a number of high profile figures, including MOFA Minister Joseph Wu; French senator Andre Vallin; member of the French National Assembly Laurence Trastour-Isnart; and Maryse Joissins Masini and Karima Zerkani-Raynal, mayor and vice mayor of Aix-en-Provence, respectively.

According to MOFA, person-to-person exchanges between Taiwan and France  have dramatically increased over the past several years, as demonstrated by a 62% increase in the number of Taiwanese travellers visiting France from 2016 to 2019. Likewise, The number of French visitors to Taiwan grew by nearly 30% over the same period, the ministry added.
