Commissioner wishes Tour de France 'bonne chance'
On Saturday 5 July, the 101st Tour de France cycling race will start in Britain, with the first 'Grand Départ' leg running from Leeds to Harrogate. In total, 22 multi-national teams will compete over 21 stages covering a total distance of 3 664 kilometres in England, Belgium, Spain and France.
"The Tour is a real test of sportsmanship, endurance and team work. I wish all the riders the best of luck as they set off on this epic race. I encourage the public to come out and show their support for the teams and I hope the event will inspire people to be more active in their daily lives," said Androulla Vassiliou," the European commissioner responsible for sport.
New cities on the Tour route include Leeds, Harrogate, York, Sheffield, Cambridge, Ypres, Oyonnax, Risoul and Maubourguet Pays du Val d'Adour. The Tour ends in the Champs- Elysées (Paris) on Sunday, 27 July.
