Manfred Weber announced today (8 September) that he will not stand as a candidate to become the next president of the European Parliament in January. Instead, he will campaign to be re-elected as Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.

He announced his decision in a tweet:

EPP calls on other groups to respect 2019 agreement

This morning, the EPP Group are set to agree a resolution calling on the S&D and Renew Groups to respect the agreement reached on 3 July 2019 to award the European Parliament presidency in the second half of the current mandate to an EPP candidate.

The EPP group announced that they will now embark on an internal process to designate their candidate for the post of president of the European Parliament. The nomination process will be completed by November.

Tusk returns to Poland

Weber announced that the EPP group supports and admires Donald Tusk’s decision to return to Poland to “fight for a better future for his country”.

Weber says that it would be a great honour to succeed Tusk and to build a more united and successful party ahead of the next European Parliament elections in 2024. Weber said: “Our mission to revive Christian democracy and centre-right parties in Europe is not over. Consequently I will not run for president of the European Parliament.”

The role of chair of the EPP Group in the parliament and president of the EPP have been distinct roles, the group will decide in April next year if they want to continue with this arrangement.

EPP runners

There are many suitable candidates and among the names bandied around are: Roberta Metsola (MT), Esteba Gonzalez Pons (ES), Esther de Lange (NL), Siegfried Muresan (RO). The smart money is on Gonzalez Pons at the moment.
