The official investigation into the shooting deaths of three Kurdish citizens in Paris last Monday (19 December) has begun, according to the city prosecutor's office.

After two men and a women were shot to death at a Kurdish cultural centre and a nearby Kurdish café in Paris' bustling central 10th district, the 69-year old man was taken into custody.

The murders shocked a community that was preparing to mark the 10th anniversary for the unsolved murders of three activists. Protests erupted which led to clashes with police over this weekend.

French law states that being under formal investigation is when there is substantial or consistent evidence that points to the implication of a suspect for a crime.

According to a statement from the prosecutor's Office, charges will be brought against the accused for attempted murder, murder, and unauthorised possession.

The company also stated that it believed there was a racist motive for the shootings.

Kurdish representatives called for the shooting of the victims to be considered terrorist attacks. They also demanded a silent protest at the scene of the shootings.
