Russia invited experts from the United Nations, Red Cross and the United Nations to investigate the deaths of dozens Ukrainian prisoners held in a prison by Moscow-backed separatists, the defence ministry announced on Sunday (31 July).

The ministry stated that it was conducting an objective investigation into the incident it described as an attack on the jail in the earlier part of the week.

Separatists claimed 53 people died and accused Kyiv that it had attacked the prison with rockets. The armed forces of Ukraine denied any responsibility and claimed that Russian artillery had attacked the prison in order to conceal the treatment of the prisoners.
