The Commission has adopted the end of the approval for the European market of pesticides chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl following the confirmation, by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), of harmful effects on human health, especially genotoxicity and neurotoxic effects for development.

Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said: “Protecting citizens from dangerous chemicals is a priority of my mandate and of the Green Pact for Europe. The Commission will not hesitate to ban any pesticide for which a dangerous impact on health has been demonstrated. I now ask the member states to withdraw from their national markets products containing these two substances."

The regulations will be published in the Official Journal in the coming days.
