The Commission has decided to launch two new pilot actions to involve citizens more when rolling out cohesion projects on the ground. The aim is to support active involvement of citizens and civil society organizations in the way the EU funds are planned, invested and monitored, to ultimately ensure better results. The launch of these actions was announced at today's High-Level Conference on 'Engaging citizens for good governance in Cohesion Policy', hosted by Democracy and Demography Vice President Dubravka Šuica and Cohesion and Reforms Commissioner Elisa Ferreira.

Vice President Šuica said: “Engagement generates ownership. We want it in the context of cohesion policy, but it does not stop there. We want better co-operation with citizens and one of the ways of achieving this is by generating the sense of ownership and reconnection to the citizens in relation to all EU decision making. This will be the very objective of the Conference on the future of Europe.”

Commissioner Ferreira said: “Cohesion Policy is on the frontline of the challenges European citizens face today, from climate to innovation, from social inclusion and skills to connectivity. Therefore, it is important for them to have a bigger say in the way this policy delivers. Both public authorities and civil society organisations will reap the benefits of more authentic citizens' participation.”

More information on the actions launched is available in this press release. Commissioner Ferreira's closing remarks will be published here. The Conference can be followed live via webstream.
