China
#Trump & Beijing main diplomatic challenges
In a report to the Legislature's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee on 6 March, Republic Of China's (ROC) Minister of Foreign Affairs David Lee stated that the ROC’s main diplomatic challenges are US President Donald Trump's new policies and Beijing's toughening measures toward Taiwan’s participation in the international community.
Since the US pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), Trump's policy toward the Asia-Pacific and his interactions with mainland Chinese leaders are keenly watched by his ministry, said Lee. Beijing has raised its pressure on limiting Taipei's international space and is expected to make similar moves in the future.
In response to these challenges, Taiwan hopes to strengthen its ties with the US, deepen its cooperation with Japan and the EU, promote its regional relations, and keep participating in international organizations, Lee promised.
