Ruslan Stefanchuk urges EU to grant Ukraine candidate status
Parliament President Roberta Metsola welcomed Ruslan Stefanchuk into the Strasbourg hemicycle. She highlighted Ukraine's fight for freedom, democracy, and the European values that bind them all. "Although the horrors that Ukraine has been through was not possible a few months back, your people have instilled hope in the rest of the world."
Metsola stated that the European Parliament will continue its support for Ukraine's bid to become a candidate to the EU. "We understand how important it is for Ukraine to be recognized as part of the European family. She said, "To tell everyone that Ukraine's place in Europe is."
Stefanchuk described how Russia's initial attack on Ukraine shocked his country and the world. However, the Ukrainians quickly realized what they had to do: unify against the aggressor.
He praised President Metsola for visiting Ukraine as one of the first European leaders after the conflict. He also thanked European countries and their support for the Ukrainian people in this difficult time. He also raised the possibility of further action in the event that the war continues, including additional EU sanctions as they begin to negatively affect European economies. He said, "Because defeat will cost us a lot more."
Stefanchuk expressed his desire for the European Union's support of his country's bid to become a candidate. He stressed that Ukraine and its people require a strong message from Europe. However, he also pointed out that any other political signal would only be beneficial to Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime. He thanked the European Parliament also for their strong support of his country.
