Green Deal: Commission launches consultation on reducing microplastic releases
The Commission is launching a public consultation on how to reduce the amount of microplastics released unintentionally into the environment. A key outcome of the Circular Economy Action Plan and the Zero Pollution Action Plan, this new initiative will focus on labelling, standardization, certification and regulatory measures for key sources of these microplastics. The consultation focuses on sources known to be the source of a large amount of microplastics, namely plastic pellets, synthetic textiles and tires. Other sources, such as paints, geotextiles and detergent capsules for laundry and dishwashers, will also be assessed. Microplastics (plastic particles with a diameter of less than 5 mm) accumulate throughout the food chain and end up in soil, air, water and living organisms. Microplastic pollution is a cause for concern due to its adverse effects on human health and biodiversity, including vulnerable ecosystems. Other impacts of the discharge of microplastics concern, for example, the quality of coastal waters or aquaculture. The consultation is open until May 17.
