Today (13 November), Commissioner Iliana Ivanova (pictured) will be in Lisbon, Portugal, for the Web Summit to announce the winners of the 2024 European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) award, celebrating a decade of recognising cities that are leading the way in delivering innovative solutions for their citizens. This year's finalists for the European Capital of Innovation category are Espoo (Finland), Turin (Italy) and West Midlands (UK). The finalists for the European Rising Innovative Cities Award are Braga (Portugal), Linz (Austria) and Oulu (Finland).
The Web Summit is an annual technology conference during which the Commission also organises several workshops. Tomorrow, the Commission will organise a workshop on ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Europe: Unlocking opportunities for your business’. This workshop will explain to participants how the EU supports innovative start-ups through initiatives such as AI Factories and GenAI4EU. Secondly, the Commission will hold a masterclass on ‘Empowering businesses: Exploring EU Digital Identity Wallets’. The EU Digital Identity Wallets will open up new business and technical opportunities for businesses. This masterclass will guide participants on the regulation, architecture and potential of the wallets for businesses.
Finally, the Commission will promote the InvestEU programme in a dedicated stand and organise specific sessions to showcase the opportunities it offers in terms of supporting innovation and start-ups. In particular, the benefits of the InvestEU Portal will be presented, reaching an audience of innovators, investors and stakeholders in the European start-up ecosystem.
