President Ma: Hong Kong universal suffrage would benefit cross-Strait ties
Speaking at a Kuomintang (KMT) party meeting on 30 September, ROC President and KMT (Taiwan’s ruling party) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou said his party looks forward to universal suffrage in Hong Kong having a positive impact on cross-Strait ties, cautioning that obstacles to the democratic process in Hong Kong will hurt cross-Strait relations. Ma expressed concern over the ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong, which have turned into a tense stand-off between police and pro-democracy protesters.
Later that day, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan's top mainland China policymaking body, said the ROC government supports Hong Kong's pursuit of democracy and hopes the governments from Beijing and Hong Kong will heed the Hong Kongers’ voices. The ROC government stressed that the ROC is a fully-fledged democracy, so the situation in Hong Kong is not comparable. Over 70% of Taiwan’s population opposes the “one country, two systems” formula that applies to Hong Kong. The ROC government has been using the 1992 Consensus, which comprises the principles of “no unification, no independence, no use of force”, to develop cross-Strait ties in a peaceful and stable way.
