Statement by EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Commissioner Christos Stylianides following explosions in China's northern port city of Tianjin

"We extend our condolences to the families and friends of those affected by the explosions that devastated parts of Tianjin in China last night (12 August).

"The European Union stands in full solidarity with the Chinese people at this time. The EU is ready to provide any necessary assistance the Chinese authorities may request in order to help deal with the situation."

At least 44 people are now known to have died, and more than 500 injured, following two major explosions in China's northern port city of Tianjin.

Twelve firefighters were among the dead, China's official Xinhua news agency said as it reported a doubling of the death toll.

Two blasts occured in a warehouse storing "dangerous and chemical goods" in the port area of the city.
