Albania purchased three Bayraktar drones made in Turkey. They will be available for use if necessary, but they will also be used to assist police officers, Edi Rama, the Albanian prime minister, said on Tuesday (20 December).

Rama stated that the drones will be available for any occasion during a signing ceremony in Tirana with Baykar, a Turkish defense company. He also said that he hoped they would never be used in war.

He didn't say when they would arrive or if Albania would like to purchase more.

Rama stated that the drones will be armed with weapons and ready to fight and will assist authorities in many areas such as monitoring the territory of Balkan countries, tracking wildfires and locating cannabis plants.

The drones will be operated by around 30 people.

After being used by the Ukrainian military to defeat Russian forces, Bayraktar drones are still in high demand.

Albania joined NATO in 2009. It has both helicopters and fighter jets.
