Pope Francis surprised young Ukrainian refugees who were being treated at a paediatric hospital here in Rome on Saturday.

The Vatican released a photo of the pope speaking to a girl who had her head completely bandaged and what looked like a tube in the throat.

Francis spoke in a message to a church conference in Slovakia on Friday, saying that the blood and tears of children and the suffering of women who are fleeing from bombings shake our conscience.
