Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy (pictured) has been sentenced to one year in prison with two further years suspended custodial sentence. He will be appealing the decision.

The ‘Bygmalion Affaire’ is linked to illegal financing of his presidential campaign in 2012.

The sentence is higher than the one proposed by the prosecution which had proposed a year, including six months suspended.

Today’s (30 September) sentence is the second conviction Sarkozy has received. In March, he was sentenced for corruption and influence peddling, in the so-called "wiretapping" case. He has also appealed this decision.
