12th European Cyber Security Month focuses on raising awareness of online manipulation tactics
This year's edition of European Cyber Security Month addresses the growing trend of social engineering, where scammers use impersonation, phishing emails or fake offers to trick people into performing certain online actions or giving away sensitive or personal information.
This annual campaign aims to promote cyber security awareness and best practices. The European Commission supports the Cyber Security Month campaign by organising events across Europe throughout October. The most successful and innovative promotional material on cyber security will be awarded a prize.
The launch event has taken place at the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions in Brussels from 2 to 4 October.
A Europe Fit for the Digital Age Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager (pictured) said: “This October, as every year, we ask citizens to stay vigilant online. Attackers are becoming more creative in devising scams, exploiting people's trust and tricking individuals, businesses and organisations into sharing information. Cyber threats are evolving rapidly and we should educate ourselves on how to stay safer online.”
The Commission's Eurobarometer on Cybersecurity Skills, published in May 2024, highlights the need for cybersecurity awareness and training, particularly from the perspective of EU businesses. The Commission's Cybersecurity Skills Academy, a platform bringing together cybersecurity skills courses and initiatives across Europe, is available to everyone online.
