‘There is a path to an agreement with the UK, but it is very narrow’ von der Leyen
Addressing the European Parliament, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said there is a path to an agreement with the UK, but that it may be very narrow.
Von der Leyen praised the work of the EU’s Chief Negotiator and his team who have been working day and night, “sometimes against all odds”. She praised Michel Barnier’s dedication and resilience.
While von der Leyen was not able to tell the parliament whether or not a deal would be reached, she said it was responsible to continue to try, but warned that though a way forward on most issues had been found, the two issues of a level playing field and fisheries remained outstanding.
