Three people, including two female police officers, were killed by a gunman in eastern Belgium during a terror attack on Tuesday morning (29 May) in Liège.

The assailant in the attack in Liege has been named as Benjamin Herman (36)originally from Rochefort Herman had been released from prison to help to adapt to life after prison.

Herman stabbed two police officers, then stole their arms and killed them before killing a further two members of the public. After taking a woman hostage at a nearby school, the police intervened and shot him dead. There were further injuries in the shoot-out but it is believed that no school children were injured.

Herman had been imprisoned for minor criminality, including the sale of drugs, he was not known to Belgium’s anti-terrorism services, but was known to be unstable and violent.

A spokeswoman for the mayor's office, Laurence Comminette, was unable to say whether the incident was terror related.

Belgian police and military have been on high alert since suicide bombers killed 32 people at the Brussels airport and metro in 2016.
