INSEDIAMENTO PARLAMENTO EUROPEOEuropean Progressive political leaders worked on an alternative to austerity at a special meeting in Rome. Chairpersons of National Parliaments from Social and Democratic family and leaders of progressive parliamentary groups from Europe discussed the urgent need of Social Europe and the migration crisis. During the meeting the PES National Parliaments Group Leaders network was established, inspired by the Italian PD Group and the German SPD Group in the respective parliaments of the two countries.

“It’s time to stand against the ideology of austerity and to take Europe back to the path of growth and jobs. After 8 years of sacrifices and one-way policies, our citizens are waiting for us to provide them with the opportunities they deserve”, said PES president Sergei Stanishev. “Without solidarity, Europe is dead”, Stanishev added.

The Party of European Socialists wants to unite the forces of all its member parties at the national level in order to present a clear alternative of growth and jobs to the policy of austerity in Europe. The campaign for a New Marshall Plan for European Youth, as presented by the PES reflects this effort, which will be based on four pillars: education, jobs, culture and children.

“Socialists are launching this project for young people, we believe they're the future of Europe, we put them on top of our political agenda”, Stanishev added.

Leader of the S&D group at the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, The Italian Minister of Economy and Finances, Pier Carlo Padoan and many socialist and democrat leaders attended the Conference of the National Parliamentary Group Chairpersons of the Progressive Parties of the European Union.

During his speech Pittella demanded fiscal flexibility from the EU institutions.

More details on the Establishing PES National Parliaments Group Leaders network will be released tomorrow.
