#Migration: EU legislation to strengthen protection of children urgently needed
The ALDE Group has called on the European Commission to come forward with a European policy framework to strengthen protection systems for refugee and migrant children, especially for unaccompanied minors.
Cecilia Wikström, ALDE LIBE coordinator, said: “The living conditions of children, particularly unaccompanied minors, who have been living in the so- called Jungle in Calais, is a disgrace for the EU. As the rapporteur for the revision of the Dublin Regulation, I am seeking possible solutions that would guarantee the safety and security of children as asylum seekers in Europe. Europol has stated that up to 10 000 refugee children have disappeared during their stay in Europe. We must seek every possibility to prevent them from being exploited by unscrupulous people and to ensure that all children on our continent are provided with proper care and security.”
Nathalie Griesbeck, ALDE LIBE member and vice-president of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on children’s rights, added: “Already three years ago, this parliament adopted a report calling for a complete strategy, real measures and minimum standards to protect unaccompanied children; yet nothing has been done.”
According to Nathalie Griesbeck, three measures are urgently needed. "First, we ask the Commission to present a comprehensive strategy for unaccompanied minors. Secondly, we ask Members States to implement their relocation obligations, especially regarding children. It is shameful to see that so far, only 75 minors have been relocated from Greece and Italy. Thirdly, we ask for a real change in the reform of the Dublin system: the transfer of minors must be prohibited, as strongly stated in the ECJ case-law. There is a terrible paradox in this situation. On the one hand, the courage of these children who have crossed the world. On the other hand, our inability to welcome them as we should.”
