GUE/NGL strongly condemns President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, thus legitimizing Israel’s apartheid policies against Palestinian Jerusalemites. Trump’s decision undermines the perspective of the two-state solution and the peace process. It shows blatant disregard for international law, the UN charter, and UN Security Council resolution.

East Jerusalem is occupied territory and the status of the city has to be resolved through direct negotiations on the basis of international law. Under UN General Assembly resolution 181 (1947) the whole of Jerusalem was established as a corpus separatum under a special international regime.

GUE/NGL condemns the ongoing massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. They are protesting to demand their basic human rights including the right of return, which Israel continues to deny. The EU must put pressure on Israel to end the use of live fire against unarmed Palestinian protestors, which has claimed dozens of lives and caused thousands of injuries.

The GUE/NGL call on the EU to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The international community must place the Palestinian people under its protection.

As Palestinians mark the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, the GUE/NGL declares solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom, justice and equality and reiterates its support for the two-state solution on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
