In an effort to prevent the Catalan independence vote proposed for 1 October, Spain’s Guardia Civil have detained a junior economy minister Josep Maria Jové and 14 others this morning. The Guardia Civil also raided several government offices, senior members of the Catalan government call for peaceful resistance, writes Catherine Feore.

The action comes a week after the Spanish constitutional court suspended the bill for a referendum approved by the Catalan government. The court notified more than 1,000 Catalan public officials, including all members of the government, senior officials and public broadcasters to:

“…to refrain from initiating, processing, informing and/or dictating, within the scope of your respective competencies, any agreement or action that allows the preparation and/or celebration of the referendum on the self-determination in Catalonia, regulated in the Decree object of this challenge, with the disclosure of the possible responsibilities, including criminal, in which you may incur by not responding to this requirement"

The rather heavy handed approach of the central government, has been been met with resistance. Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Prime Minister tweeted that his ‘government defends the rights of all Spaniards in fulfilling its obligation. The rule of law works’

The President of the Catalan National Assembly, Jordi Sanchez, has called for peaceful resistance, ""The time has come - let's resist peacefully; let's come out and defend our institutions."
