Commission welcomes launch of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office
On 1 June, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office began operating. Vice President Vera Jourová, Commissioner Johannes Hahn and Commissioner Didier Reynders said: “As of today, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) is up and running. This opens a new chapter in fighting cross-border crime. The first supranational prosecution service is launching its operations to protect the EU taxpayer’s money, competent to investigate and prosecute crimes like money laundering, corruption and cross-border VAT fraud.” The full press statement, a factsheet and a Q&A are available online. To mark this important day, European Commission Values and Transparency Vice President Věra Jourová, Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders, Luxembourg Justice Minister Sam Tanson, and Portuguese Justice Minister Francisca Van Dunem travelled to the EPPO headquarters in Luxembourg to meet with European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi. The European Parliament was represented by MEP Monika Hohlmeier, who joined virtually.
