EU mobilizes €9 million to tackle #Haiti food crisis

The European Union has allocated €9 million in humanitarian aid in response to the deteriorating food and nutrition situation in Haiti. Humanitarian assistance will cover the essential food and nutrition needs of more than 130,000 people living in the most affected areas.

"For the EU, the humanitarian situation in Haiti is not a forgotten crisis. We are determined to provide vital support to the people affected by the food and nutrition crisis in the country. This package is in addition to the 12 million euros allocated in 2018 to meet the urgent food and nutritional needs of Haitians," said Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Commissioner Christos Stylianides.

The funds allocated will benefit families living in areas most affected by the crisis as well as children suffering from acute malnutrition. Vital nutritional support will also be provided to more than 5,000 under-five children with acute malnutrition. At the same time, the EU will support actions to strengthen the analysis of the food situation and improve the quality of the humanitarian response.

In the context of the European Commission's humanitarian aid, special attention is given to victims of forgotten crises, that is to say, serious and prolonged humanitarian crises in which the affected populations do not receive sufficient international aid as is the case in Haiti. With € 404 million allocated since 1994, Haiti is the main recipient of humanitarian aid from the European Commission in Latin America and the Caribbean.
