Renew Europe demands urgent action as Gaza faces catastrophic suffering and famine
While the Israeli government has just called for the evacuation of Gaza City, taking the reckless risk of further aggravating the humanitarian crisis, the European Parliament cannot remain silent in the face of this human tragedy unfolding before our eyes. Renew Europe is taking its responsibilities and is leading the discussions to develop a resolution that will be submitted to the members of the European Parliament for adoption later this week.
Our group is defending a clear and strong message calling for decisive European action to end the famine in Gaza while ensuring terrorist groups are excluded from governance. Renew Europe MEP Hilde Vautmans (Open-VLD, Belgium), Renew Foreign Affairs coordinator declared: "We cannot stand by while children starve because trucks full of food are blocked at borders. This famine is not a natural disaster, it is a political act, and Europe must respond with political courage. That means opening crossings, sanctioning those responsible, whether Hamas leaders, violent settlers, or Israeli ministers and suspending privileges until international law is respected. If Europe continues to speak of values while refusing to act, we will lose our credibility and betray our founding promise: never again."
Renew Europe's demands include :Immediate humanitarian action
Permanent ceasefire and opening of all border crossings
Large-scale provision of food, medical care, and psychosocial support for children
Full restoration of UNRWA mandate and funding with strong oversight
Targeted sanctions and accountability
Enhanced sanctions against Hamas terrorist organization
Targeted sanctions against Israeli ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich for inciting crimes Suspension of EU-Israel Association Agreement trade pillar until violations cease
The resolution calls for member state recognition of Palestine provided two conditions are met: immediate release of all 48 remaining hostages and ensuring terrorist groups, including Hamas, have no role in Gaza's future. The Palestinian Authority is the only viable governance actor. Renew Europe reaffirms that the two-state solution remains our only viable path, but it cannot be built on the foundations of terrorism.
