Admiration was shown for Navalny's willingness to return to Russia in 2021 from Germany. He had been there for treatment for a Soviet-era nerve agents. Russia denied trying to kill him.
Leonid Volkov, his chief of staff, said that Navalny's lawyer arrived at Correctional Colony No. 2 in Pokrov, which is 119km (74 miles) east from Moscow. He was informed that there was no such convict.
Volkov stated on Telegram that he didn't know where Alexei was or which colony he was being taken to.
Later, Sergey Yazhan, a regional prison observer, said that Navalny was taken to the IK-6 penal colonies at Melekhovo, near Vladimir, approximately 250 km (155 mi) east of Moscow.
Yazhan is the chairman of the local Public Monitoring Commission. This commission works closely with prison authorities and protects the rights of prisoners in every Russian region.
Russia's prison system could not be reached immediately for comment.
Navalny describes President Vladimir Putin's Russia in a dystopian world run by criminals and thieves where wrong is right, and judges as corrupt representatives of a doomed class.
He criticized Putin via video link at a Russian court last month, calling him a madman for starting a "stupid warfare" that was killing innocent Russian and Ukrainian citizens.
Navalny was sentenced to prison for parole violations upon his return from Germany.
On March 24, he was sentenced to nine more years for fraud and contempt. He claims that all charges against him were fabricated and are meant to thwart his political ambitions.
Judge ordered Navalny to be transferred to a maximum security prison. There, his rights to visit and correspond will be diminished.
Navalny's political network was largely destroyed after it was banned as an "extremist" organization. Senior aides and organizers were either sentenced or forced to flee the country.
Navalny stated two weeks ago that the new criminal case against him involved creating an extremist organization and inciting hatred toward authorities. These are serious offenses that can carry a maximum of 15 years in prison.
