Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez asked ministers, officials, and employees in the private sector to cease wearing ties on Friday, as heatwaves sweep Europe. This will increase demand for energy-guzzling air conditioning.

Sanchez stated that Sanchez was not wearing a tie at a news conference. "This is a way to save energy."

Europe's high summer temperatures are putting strain on its power systems. This is raising concerns about the possibility of a regional drive for gas savings in the event that Russia invades Ukraine.

Sanchez stated that his government will take urgent measures to increase efficiency and energy savings next week, in a serious statement.

He said, "I have already asked ministers and all public officials. I would also like to ask the private industry, if they haven’t already, to not wear a tie when it's not necessary, because that will help us confront the energy savings that are so important in our nation."
