Spanish coastguard rescues three African migrants stowed away on ship's rudder

Three migrants were rescued by the Spanish coastguard after they were stowed on board a ship from Nigeria that had arrived in the Canary Islands.

The three stowaways can be seen perched on the rudders of cs oil in a photo posted by the coastguard to Twitter on Monday.

According to Marine Traffic, a ship tracking website, the Althini II arrived in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Monday, after an 11-day journey from Lagos, Nigeria.

According to the Coastguard, the migrants were brought into the port and treated by the health services.

Spanish-owned Canary Islands is a popular destination for African migrants trying to reach Europe. Spanish data show that migration by sea to the archipelago increased 51% in the first five month of the year, compared to one year ago.
