Migrant paraglides over border fence into Spain
A migrant flew from Morocco over a fence into Spain's North African enclave Melilla and evaded authorities, officials announced on Thursday (1 December).
Two witnesses saw the paraglider flying overhead as they drove along the ring road around the enclave. They alerted police at 6pm (17h15 GMT) and the representative of the Spanish government in Melilla stated in a statement.
The statement said: "Patrols immediately went to the area, but they were unable to find the migrant."
El Faro obtained footage that shows a person being harnessed to a paragliding canopy landing close to the road. The border fences are approximately 12km (7.5 miles) high and range in height between six and ten metres.
Melilla is the main entry point for migrants looking to cross into European territory via Morocco. According to data from the Interior Ministry, at least 1,155 migrants undocumented crossed the land border between 15 October and now.
This heavily guarded border is the only one between the European Union (Africa) and a country in Africa. Ceuta, a Spanish enclave, is the other.
It was also the scene of a deadly mass crossing attempt in June when more than 2,000 migrants stormed it and engaged in a two hour skirmish with border officers.
