‘We are prepared for refugees and they are welcome’ von der Leyen
Asked at a joint press conference between NATO and the EU on how Europe could prepare for refugees, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU was fully prepared for refugees and that they would be made welcome.
“We have worked for weeks to be prepared, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst,” said von der Leyen. “We have - with all the frontline member states - explicit contingency plans to welcome and host immediately those refugees from Ukraine.
“We have support for internally displaced people [within Ukraine], we have a lot of support through ECHO humanitarian aid in terms of shelter, and all the necessities people who are internally displaced immediately need; on top of this there will be financial support increased for Ukraine, which is available right now. Preparedness is fully alerted and we hope that there will be few refugees, but we are fully prepared for them and they are welcome.”
