The man suspected of removing a Banksy mural from a Ukrainian town could be sentenced to up to 12 years imprisonment if convicted, Ukraine's interior ministry stated on Monday (2 January).

Officials claim that the artwork depicting a woman wearing a gas mask with a dressing gown and holding a fire extinguisher was removed from a wall in Hostomel on 2 December.

On its website, the ministry stated that it had handed a "suspicion note" to the man it believed orchestrated the operation.

According to a ministry statement, the artwork of the famous British artist was valued at more than 9 million hryvnia ($243,000).

It stated that the criminals had used wooden boards and polyethylene to transport graffiti.

"Thanks for the concern of citizens the police and other security force managed to arrest criminals."

The mural was saved.

Banksy confirmed that he had painted the mural, along with six others, in areas that were heavily damaged by fighting following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February.
