#CETACheck: citizen campaign asks MEPs to vote against CETA

CETA, the planned free trade agreement between the EU and Canada has been approved by the EU governments and will be now discussed and voted on in the European Parliament. The vote is scheduled for end of 2016 or early 2017.

Today (8 November) sees the launch of the final phase of the campaign entitled "CETA CHECK". Civil society organizations from all EU countries will call on citizens to ask Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to vote against CETA. The campaign is supported by the EU-wide Stop TTIP alliance which, together with the self-organized Stop TTIP European Citizens' Initiative, collected over 3.5 million signatures against TTIP & CETA.

“Europe’s governments approved CETA without addressing citizens’ concerns. That’s why it is important for citizens to pressure MEPs on how they expect them to vote,” says Robert Fidrich, program manager of Friends of the Earth Hungary.

"CETA threatens important EU standards and regulations. It creates a parallel justice with privileges for foreign companies through its Investment Court System. It is vital that we tell MEPs not to support this toxic agreement," explains Wiebke Schroeder, Senior Campaigner at the consumer watchdog SumOfUs.

The campaign's central forum will be the www.cetacheck.eu website. In addition to sending requests to MEPs via email, citizens will be  encouraged to engage directly with their  elected representatives  via phone, in personal meetings or at public events.
