Civil Liberties Committee holds second hearing on NSA 'snooping'

21872979The implications of NSA snooping revelations for key EU-US deals such as Safe Harbour (on privacy principles), the Terrorist Finance Tracking Programme (TFTP) and the Passenger Name Record (PNR) were discussed on 12 Sep at the second hearing of the Civil Liberties Committee inquiry into US and EU countries' surveillance schemes.

In the first session of the hearing (behind closed doors), MEPs were briefed on the results of the meeting between EU and US data protection experts last July. In the second session, Jacob Kohnstamm, Chairman of the Article 29 Working Party (national and EU data protection supervisors) gave his views on the impact of surveillance programmes on citizens' privacy and key data-protection-related agreements between the EU and the US.
