KazakhstanSolidarityVadimOn 5 December 2013, the international community officially recognised the work carried out by the human rights defenders in Kazakhstan, marking a very significant moment in the struggle of this country to become democratic. Vadim Kuramshin, a human rights activist and lawyer was awarded the prestigious 18th annual Ludovic-Trarieux International Human Rights Prize in Paris.

Mr. Kuramshin was unable to attend as he is serving a 12 year prison sentence in Kazakhstan. Representatives of the Open Dialog Foundation were present at the ceremony and witnessed as Mr. Kuramshin’s mother, Olga Koltunova, accepted the prize on behalf of her jailed son.

In an important speech, the Dean of the Paris Bar Christiane Feral-Schuhl highlighted “Kazakhstan has gone from a Soviet Republic to a Presidential dictatorship. The Kazakh authorities do not hesitate to use the Interpol arrest warrants to attack political dissidents in Europe. We have also recognised the threats to the legal profession in Kazakhstan, its independence.”

Another important member also present was the human rights defender and Kazakh lawyer, Zinaida Mukhortova, who, during the visit to Paris, shared her experience of torture and ill-treatment when she was wrongfully admitted to the psychiatric hospital while fighting corruption.
