They mark the coming together of athletes from all corners of the planet to engage in the ultimate sporting competition and one of the most powerful unifying forces in our society. I hope that the Sochi Winter Olympics are a success, both on the 'field of play' but also beyond it. I would also like to wish the best of luck to all the competitors, and in particular of course, to all my fellow Europeans."
